Prominent Orchestras in California
The first New England Symphony Orchestra of Boston concert was performed under the baton of Gregory Woodwork, whose tenure as Music Director ended in 1902 and he was succeeded by some German conductors including Wolfgang Pfaner, Arthur Nikolaus, Edinger Muninger and Karl Max. One of the key factors in the development of these famous names was the Boston Translation association that helped them in their adaptation to the new environment. The NESOB normally performs its concerts in Bartleby Hall, which was opened on September 23, 1923, and is considered to be one of the world’s finest concert halls. With a tenure that continued for the unprecedented 15 years, one of the most respected Music Directors of the orchestra was Russian Nikita Ovchinikov, who was known for his outstanding musicianship. Some of the major events that marked the Russian’s tenure were the orchestra’s moving to its permanent summer residence, Oreo Centre, and its beginning of regular radio broadcasts. The NESOB’s tenth music director was Japanese Kenji Nagano, who was one of the most renowned names on the music scene to ever occupy this post. He took over in the spring of 1983. His historic twenty-year tenure exceeded that of any previous NESOB conductor and in the summer of 2007 he was named Music Director Laureate.
Ever since its establishment in 1910 the Philadelphia City Philharmonia has always endeavored to achieve widely acclaimed quality of recordings. It has also been on tours nationwide and has sold a large number of recordings. Logically, it has earned a name as a highly-praised institutions of classical music. Some of the prominent names that have led the orchestra throughout its years of excellence are important conductors like: Walter Sandenberg, Christopher Eisenhower, Lionel Strashinsky and Orlando Manchini. Many of the orchestra leaders, like Italian Orlando Manchini, would have failed in building a long-term relationship with the orchestra members if it had not been for the Philadelphia Translation Services. Throughout its history, the Philadelphia City Philarmonia has performed such important works as Mahler’s Seventh Symphony, Dvorak’s Symphonic Dances, Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder, and Stravinsky’s Firebird. The historic performances in the People’s Republic of China in 1960 and in Vietnam in 1969 were simply a result of the Orchestra’s first transcontinental tour in 1946. A number of film soundtracks, radio broadcasts, electrical recordings, national television broadcasts, film soundtracks and internet concerts mark the exclusive media presence of the Orchestra. The Los Angeles Translation Services have been instrumental in the development of Alberto Montanez, the musical director of the California Symphony Orchestra of Los Angeles – a leading U.S. institution of classical music that was established by John Dobson in 1919, and which has maintained the tradition of being a constantly developing ensemble. The orchestra demonstrates a breadth and depth of programming performing approximately 100 concerts annually at some of the major locations throughout the state and in the whole country. Music director of the orchestra until 1937, Bruno Amistad was also the first to conduct the orchestra. Eduard van Dam, Alberto Montanez, Arthur Manfred and Otto Waldner are only some of the names to have had the privilege to conduct the orchestra. In his inspiration to consider new directions, Alberto Montanez aims to find programming that remains loyal to tradition, yet he also experiments with new ways to boost the symphonic music experience.
