The Beatles 2009 Remasters

by Harold Laurence Quesenberry

The Beatles UK studio albums were first remastered digitally and released on CD back in the’80s at that time digital mastering for CD was still a relatively new art and since that time much has been found out about how to master more effectively but even more important is all of the many technological advances during that time.

The many advances in digital mastering and all of the information learned on how to best remaster digitally have been put to good use with the Beatles remasters of 2009. On September 9 The Beatles released both The Beatles in Stereo and The Beatles Mono Box Set. And both of these box sets sound fantastic. If you have not yet heard them then I recommend that you hear The Beatles remastered as soon as possible.

Which flavor of remastered Beatles should a Beatles fan buy? Well for this guy the answer was easy: “all of them” but if you have to choose just one you’ll most likely go with the Beatles in Stereo because it includes all thirteen of their studio LPs and most listeners will prefer listening to the stereo mixes in comparison to the mono mixes.

The Beatles Mono Box Set is more for hardcore Beatles lovers who want to listen for every single difference between the stereo & mono mixes (and with some songs they are really quite different) and for those who want to hear the Fab Four how they originally listened to them (this, of course, applies to older fans who were there for The Beatles in person in the 60s.)

On December 8th there will be a 3rd choice: The Beatles USB Flash Drive. This USB flash drive contains The Beatles in Stereo Box Set in a little thing you can easily hold in your hand. Isn’t that cool? It holds all of the albums in two ways; better than CD quality 24bit FLAC and 320kbps mp3s.

That “better than CD quality” thing is what will excite a good number of audiophiles but for most listeners it is the mp3s that’ll that’ll be added to the iPod.
