A few amongst us are gifted enough to teach themselves to play the piano. Those talented enough can usually teach themselves to play by ear, without the use of any books. Most of the rest of us mere mortals, need books to pick up the technique required to learn to play properly.

Instruction books for learning the piano come in a number of styles and cover a further number of levels and formats. If you are taking lessons, your teacher should be able to guide you to some specific piano books. You can probably find piano books to cover any style that you are interested in playing. If you are following a formal program however, your choices may be restricted by the examining boards that run the tests that will take.

The next stage is probably the use of song books; certainly following a style more in your choosing. These books can cover all manner of styles from modern popular music, to Jazz, Blues and even old Music Hall material. The important thing is that new music will help you practice your music reading skills, so there i a benefit to all types of piano books. And playing music that you like is also important, because it helps maintain your motivation.

If your aim is purely to play for your own entertainment and pleasure then you might buy different piano books to those that are more interested in a proper technical musical grounding. If the latter is your aim, then the books you will want to buy will cover many technical aspects of music and of the use of the piano such as the pedals. If you have a teacher, let them guide you to the right books for you.

Some piano books have been designed with accompaniment in mind. In other words, playing music with others. This type of piano book is likely to be different again, to the technical books we discussed earlier. Again, be guided by an experienced hand and seek advice if you are unsure.

If you know the type of book you need or even the name of it, it may well be worth your while looking on the Internet for the cheapest place to buy the book. Online stores are often much cheaper than traditional music or book stores, simple because they do not have to carry the level of stocks that conventional real world sellers have. So, you can save a lot of money on piano books by shopping online.

Make sure that you buy a piano book that is suitable for your level. Do not buy books that you cannot use, no matter how appealing the music they contain. Again, if you have a teacher, take their advice, and you won’t go far wrong.
